  12. Seminar Room, 1:15pm

Discussion: How do we get more kids to code?

  13. There's been a lot of coverage of the poor ICT curriculum in schools when it comes to serious programming. The Government is taking steps to fix that, but in the meantime what initiatives and ideas are there for working with schools now to improve their computing and design education? This will be a practical discussion lead by Shirley Atkinson from Plymouth University. If you're already involved with schools, or would like to be, this is a chance to share ideas and find people to work with.

  14. Main Auditorium, 2pm

  15. Node.js: JavaScript from Client to Server and Beyond!

Node.js offers to introduce a potentially harmonised stack and a scalable real-time application framework Rob and Gary will give a whistlestop tour of the history of server-side Javascript to date from simple validation to the arrival of V8. They'll then share their experiences working with node.js on live projects, separating fact from fiction and where it does and doesn't fit in. Along the way they'll share tips on how to evaluate new technology, not just because it's new and shiny, and the pro's and cons of living on the bleeding edge.

Rob is CEO and Gary Technical Lead at leading Plymouth-based agency GOSS Interactive.

  16. Designing Content: How web designers can stop worrying and learn to love content strategy

In a perfect world, every company has a content strategist. But often, it's web designers, not content strategists, who must orchestrate content production and integration.

Sophie will discuss which tools and techniques are most useful to a small team working with clients who have little content expertise, and share lessons learned from integrating content strategy into her own design process on several projects, helping clients produce great content.

  17. Seminar Room, 2pm

  18. Mobile and Responsive Design Testing

An in-depth look at testing websites on mobile devices. The talk will cover device demographics and common design gotchas; simple UI testing, like tap targets, and tap and hold; as well as testing websites on a lossy mobile network and how to simulate various mobile network conditions.

  19. Appy or Weby? the WWW dilemma

It was desktop vs. mobile, then web vs. native which soon became web app vs. website. In this time of geek confusion we try to shed some light on the web ecosystem and how things are evolving. There are many choices but what gets asked less often is: what does the user want? Design, development and debugging are some of the topics discussed along with quirks and best practice.

    • Luca Sale @blackberryluca Luca is Blackberry Developer Evangelist for Research in Motion, and an experienced mobile app developer.
  20. 3:00pm

    Break

    Free tea and coffee

  22. Whisky and Web Design

Whisky and Web design share a lot in common. No, really. Ben Reynhart will show you why they do, discuss his journey of refining and improving his design process, whittling out the waste to solve the crux of the problem earlier, and why wireframes and paper prototypes play an increasingly important role in Mutant Labs workflow. He'll also share how they spend time educating clients and the tools they use to manage expectations - ultimately leading to a better result and happier clients.

    • Ben Reynhart @benje Ben is Creative Director for Mutant Labs, an independent studio who formulate award-winning mobile games, iphone apps and rich interactive experiences. Massive fan of Valve games and Japanese food. When not overseeing projects, he dabbles between design and user experience for web projects, mobile apps and games.
  23. Discussion Session: Collaboration

As a follow up to the digpen II discussion Ben will give a *brief* synopsis on the importance of collaboration, how much tech there is available and how easy it is to try, but then dive into an audience participated session discussing the tools we as a community rely on and would recommend other developers look at.

    • Ben Jameir-Masters @benholiio Ben is a front-end developer at Mutant Labs, average drummer and previously Plymouth's 9th best amateur beatboxer.
